Day 1 OR Tambo International Airport – Kempton Park
Distance: ± 8 km
After arrival at OR Tambo International Airport, collect your rental car. Short drive to the local guesthouse, which features a spacious peaceful, garden, recover from your flight and acclimatize, before continuing on your way. The air conditioned, en-suite Guest rooms are elegantly decorated and offer Satellite, Wi-Fi, a safe, fridge and coffee station. A tasty dinner is being served at the in-house (à la carte restaurant).
Day 2 Kempton Park – Drakensberg
Distance: ± 355 km
Your first destination is close to Bergville in the center of the beautiful landscape in the Northern parts of the Drakensberg. Here is a remarkable view over the Mountain range and the famous Amphitheatre. After the day’s long drive you might like to stretch your legs on a short walk while taking in the panoramic views.
Day 3 & 4 Drakensberg
You have two days in the magical Drakensberg Mountains at your disposal. You might like to rise early in the morning and go hiking with the accompaniment of a knowledgeable guide, after your return to the lodge enjoy a warm filling breakfast. You might also like to visit the uKhahlamba National Park (Royal Natal National Park) which is only a few kilometers away. Little pathways with a direct view over the Amphitheater run from the Lodge, you might like to potter along one of the well-marked trails if you find the time. Alternatively you might like to rest, take a walk or play some tennis. The lodge also offers horse riding for the more agile, directly from the lodge premises (optional).
Day 5 Drakensberge – Rorke’s Drift
Distance: ± 200 km
Drive through KwaZulu Natal to the Battlefields not far from Dundee, where many battles took place in 1879 between native Zulu and the colonial English, these battles had a big influence on the history of South Africa. Your overnight accommodation is a spacious, luxurious cottage with private veranda and a lovely view over the Buffalo River Gorge. The cottage gardens are well kept and its native African plants attract much birdlife. You might like to laze around the pool and take in your beautiful surroundings.
Day 6 Battlefields
Today you will go on a descriptive journey through the history of the Anglo – Zulu Battles, vividly, retold by an empathetic historian. The battlefield-tours at Rorke’s Drift and Isandlwana are informative and interesting alike.
Otherwise you could go for a bush walk, ride a mountain bike or go horse riding En route you might spot a few animals. In the evening around the campfire you can reminisce about the days impressions with a glass of wine in hand.
Day 7 Battlefields – St. Lucia
Distance: ± 290 km
Drive to the small coastal village St Lucia, which is surrounded by the iSimangaliso Wetland Park being a World Heritage site. The park encompasses about 332 000 ha and features eight different eco systems. Eldorado is a must see for conservationists, where you will find a unique variety of interesting flora and fauna. Tonight you will stay in a Lodge with a tropical garden, in which you can watch a huge variety of birdlife. Every room is spacious and modern with its own foyer and small terrace, with direct access to a crystal clear blue swimming pool.
Day 8 & 9 St. Lucia & Environment
Spend two days in St. Lucia, where you might like to do some leisurely shopping or alternatively you might go on a two hour boat trip on the Lake St.Lucia. This boat trip gives you a chance to see hippo and crocodiles, there is also a huge variety of bird life on the water for keen bird watchers. Recently it was surveyed that roughly 1400 Hippos and about 2000 crocodiles inhabit the lake. For the avid birdwatchers there are many hiking trails at St.Lucia, on which you can view bird activity in the wild – the iSimangaliso Wetland Park is home to roughly 500 bird species.
Higly recommendable is a trip to Cape Vidal, which lies on the Eastern Shore line. En route you will find different types of Antelope and wild animals, and with a bit of luck a rhino. At Cape Vidal you might like to wet your feet in the water or take a walk on the endless stretch of unspoilt beach.
Alternatively you could take part in a Zulu Cultural Tour, get an insight into their day-to-day life in the past and today, their interesting culture and at the Crafts Market they sell some hand made, African souvenirs.
Day 10 St. Lucia – Mabibi
Distance: ± 210 km
Today you continue in an Eastern direction to Maputaland, Mabibi. Here you will stay directly next to the beach, with a view over the blue ocean that is simply breathtaking. Mabibi is a magical place featuring tropical forests, grasslands, bush savannah, huge inland lakes, and exquisite untouched beaches. Enjoy your luxurious accommodation, the fantastic surroundings, complimented by exquisite food.
Day 11 Mabibi / Maputaland
Today you will have a memorable day at one of the most beautiful private beaches in the country. You can go for a walk, swim or go snorkeling in the crystal clear, warm water. You might like to end a perfect day with a sundowner at Lake Sibiya in the late evening.
Day 12 Mabibi – Manyoni Private Game Reserve
Distance: ± 175 km
After “Berg, Battlefield und Beach” head towards the bush. Today you will be driving towards the Manyoni Private Game Reserve. Your accommodation for tonight is rather luxurious and features a spectacular view that stretches far over the landscape and has the Lebombo Mountains as a backdrop. In the late afternoon you can partake in your very first game drive in an open air 4×4 safari vehicle through the “Big 5” Game Reserve. When you return after sunset you will be treated to a delicious dinner at the Lodge.
Day 13 & 14 Manyoni Private Game Reserve
Enjoy a two-day safari adventure, highlighted with many wildlife encounters. The Zululand Rhino Reserve is home to much wildlife, the reserve undertakes game drives through the park early in the mornings, as most animals are more active at this time, you will be back at the lodge in time for breakfast. In the afternoon you are welcome to take a nap in your chalet, or drive with the Ranger to the closest water hole where you can watch the birds and wildlife from the safety of a hide. In the late afternoon you can participate in another game drive park in search of more wild life. If you would like a closer look at the animals and the natural surroundings you might like to book a guided bush walk with a Ranger.
Day 15 Manyoni Private Game Reserve – Piet Retief
Distance: ± 170 km
Continue your journey to Piet Retief in the province Mpumalanga. Your overnight accommodation is in a familiar Guesthouse with amenities like air-conditioning, TV, coffee and tea station. You might like to relax on the verandah or in the spacious garden with a refreshing beverage and revue your many exciting experiences of the last few days.
Day 16 Piet Retief – OR Tambo International Airport, Johannesburg
Distance: ± 340 km
Drive to Johannesburg, OR Tambo International Airport, return the rental car and have a safe trip home.
